About 38,000 children, young persons and adults in Sweden have an intellectual disability, and society´s aim is for their lives to be as good as everybody else´s.
A person with an intellectual disability is entitled by law to obtain the help he or she needs in order to live independently and participate in the life of the community.
Intellectual disability varies from one person to another.
But all people with intellectual disability need more support than others. Extra time to understand, to learn new things and to express their thoughts and feelings.
For some people, intellectual disability means that they cannot speak and instead show their feelings and wishes with their bodies and facial expressions. They need a lot of help from people they know well. But even a person with a severe intellectual disability is happy and sad like others, feels anger and desire, has favourite music and favourite food. Other people with intellectual disability can speak and understand things which are simple and belong to their everyday lives. They need support from people who make sure that they are properly cared for, and who help them with things like food, clothing, appointments, and money.
Many people with a mild intellectual disability can live independently in a flat of their own, have a job or some daily activity and participate in the life of the community.
They can read things written in easy language and they understand money but may still have difficulty in working out how far their wages will go. Even a person who can manage a great deal on his or her own, still needs help and support from others. Intellectual disability can have various causes. It can be due to a chromosomal change, to a foetal injury or to some other injury sustained at birth. Accidents and illness during childhood and adolescence can also cause damage. Intellectual disability may coincide with other functional impairments, such as physical disability, vision impairment or hearing impairment.
FUB is working to enable children, young persons and adults with an intellectual disability to lead a good life. FUB is short for "The Swedish National Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability".
FUB has about 29 000 members in more than 165 local branches all over the country. Most members have an intellectual disability themselves or are related to someone who has. But many other people belong simply because they share our basic views.
The FUB emblem consists of two circles.
They symbolise all of us human beings.
The outer circle is everybody who does not have an intellectual disability. The inner circle is those who have.
That ring is slightly jagged, to show that they have functional impairments and need support.
Otherwise, as the circles show, there isn´t all that much difference between us. If you would like to know more and join us or phone our national organisation in Stockholm on + 46 (0)8-508 866 00 or e-mail fub@fub.se
